We have visited two other canal filled cities on this trip but we finally made it to the prime canal city Venice. Really no other canal city can compare to Venice. Our Airbnb over looks a small canal that the gondolas like to use. Ashley has enjoyed leaning out the window and watching them paddle by. Today is our only full day in Venice and we mostly spent it wandering the maze of alleys and canals.
The first thing we did this morning was take a gondola ride. Its the number one thing to do in Venice. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. We got to leisurely float through some of the narrow canals. We went out on to the grand canal and under the famous rialto bridge.
Afterwards we spent a lot of time wandering. We got to see St Marks Basilica and the Doges palace. We explored some of the more deserted alleys and canals.
I also got my first cup of Italian gelato. I got a scoop of dulce de leche and a scoop of espresso. I don’t want to over hype the gelato but it was very good. And I’m excite to try the gelato in all the other Italian cities we’re visiting.
I was also amazed by all the glassware. I didn’t know that Venice has a 1000 year history of glass making. There were so many glass shops we wandered in and out of. We couldn’t help but buying a few pieces.
I’m going to grab a cappuccino in the morning and then we’re off to Florence.
