Bruges, Belgium is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the north because it has 15 kilometers of canals. There has be a continuous settlement here since the 10th century. The city was a major textile trading center between 1200 and 1500. Though only a few of the buildings today date from that time period the city center is filled with buildings of that style. In the 1800s the city wanted to restore the look from its golden age so most of the city center is filled with brick stepped houses and cobblestone streets.
Its a wonderful place to walk around but the best way to see everything is from the canals. We took a canal boat tour and got to see some of the famous buildings including the former house of Audrey Hepburn.
Though the history of Bruges is very interesting it turns out that this place is quite the food destination. They are known for their waffles, fries, chocolate, and beer. I tried everything and I think the waffles are my favorite. We only could spend one day in Bruges but we’ll grab one more waffle before we head to Amsterdam.
