Yesterday Ashley and I visited the famous ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The ruins are massive and we walked the entire place in the hot summer sun. We saw so much and there is honestly so much to talk about so I’m going to just talk about two things, food and art.
One of the first places we went was the bakery. This was a large central bakery near the forum. The cylinder type things in the picture were used for milling flour and next to there were some ovens for baking.
What I was really excited to see were the taberna. There are dozens of them throughout Pompeii for you to see with many different styles and designs. These served food that could be eaten there or taken away. The counter had holes in it that would have a large clay pot that would be filled with food. They are an interesting slice of ancient Roman life that you may not think about.
Some of the houses (or mansions) were incredible. Its amazing how well preserved they are. Like in this one a lot of the stucco is still on the pillars. And you can see some of the painted frescos. I noticed yellow and red were a popular color choice (blue was some what popular with the wealthy folks at the front of their houses).
I don’t know anything about this fresco but its incredible. Not only is it an excellent piece of art but its also two thousand years old.
